‘Tis the season to be jolly, and what could be more jolly than a delightful smelling home? Welcome your family and friends over with the scents of the season by putting your essential oil diffuser to good use. No need to buy a pre-made blend — the following simple essential oil recipes will make your home for the holidays smell great while adding much-needed moisture to the air. Plus, making your own blends with individual essential oils leaves you with many more options for future blends and other uses!
Whether you set up a fake Christmas tree each year or your real tree’s scent wears off the closer you get to Christmas, put a little natural forest scent in your essential oil diffuser with the following recipe:
Make your home smell like your favorite Christmas time treat with:
A note: "Vanilla essential oil" doesn’t actually exist, at least not in the same way that other essential oils do. It's impossible to get the scent of vanilla beans through the distillation processes, which is how other essential oils are made. So for vanilla beans, a solvent has to be introduced making it an absolute instead of an essential oil, like rose absolute. While absolutes are similar to essential oils they tend to be thicker and more expensive.
Your friends and family alike will want to run, run, as fast as they can to the house that smells like the gingerbread man! To recreate this sweet winter scent in your home, add the following essential oils to your diffuser:
Follow up that gingerbread scent with an egg-citing eggnog-scented essential oil blend to really get you in the holiday spirit. Get the decadent scent of the ‘nog without any of the alcohol in your essential oil diffuser. Or, get the best of both worlds and sip your favorite treat while inhaling its sweet aroma.
Finally, when the end of the holiday season comes around, unwind with:
Peppermint essential oil is uplifting and invigorating while the lavender in this essential oil blend promotes the opposite: feelings of calm and relaxation. Frankincense — one of the three precious gifts given to baby Jesus by the three kings — also helps you to just chill. Together, peppermint, lavender, and frankincense essential oils promote the feelings that can be in short supply post-holiday season, so run this blend in order to recharge your batteries. Just be sure that the essential oils you're using are of good quality.
You can also dab diluted amounts of good-quality peppermint and lavender essential oils onto your temples for headache relief, which is why we love making our own essential oil blends. It gives us more uses than adding them to our diffusers. Plus, we share the ultimate home scent D.I.Y. below — no diffuser required.
For those without an essential oil diffuser, you can D.I.Y. a seasonal comfort-scented home with just three items: a pot on the stove, water, and that cinnamon powder in the back of your kitchen cabinet. Add 3-4 shakes of the ground cinnamon to a pot of water on the stove or a crockpot and let it simmer, allowing the aroma of sweet cinnamon waft through your kitchen.
This also works well for those who have one diffuser but they want to keep the wonderful winter scents rooms other than the kitchen.
