Whip up this homemade sugar scrub in a jiff to show your loved one how sweet you think they are. You only need three ingredients, two of which you may already have in your kitchen:
This scrub is ultra-exfoliating, making it the perfect gift for dry, winter skin, just like our specially formulated handcrafted soaps that exfoliate dead skin cells. Personalize this D.I.Y. gift by selecting the best type of sugar for your recipient. Brown sugar is gentler than white granulated sugar, so this can be a better option for someone with sensitive skin. On the other hand, if you know your loved one struggles with dry, itchy skin, especially during the winter months, then the more abrasive white granulated sugar may be your best bet.
Once you've selected your sugar, combine it with the melted coconut oil. The sugar and coconut oil smell heavenly together, but you can always add essential oils like lavender, rose absolute, or ylang-ylang. Check out our selection of high-quality essential oils here. After adding in the optional essential oils, spoon the mixture into a glass jar. Tie a ribbon around it for a gift that doesn’t even need to be fully wrapped.
For a holiday twist — literally — make this sugar scrub look like a favorite holiday treat by scenting it with peppermint and vanilla essential oils and adding in a bit of safe-for-skin red food coloring to create a candy cane-esque scrub. You'll need to use white granulated sugar for this version. After you've combined the sugar and coconut oil, put half of the mixture into a separate bowl. Add the red food coloring and peppermint essential oil to one of the mixtures while adding vanilla absolute to the other. Alternate adding in a layer of the red peppermint-scented scrub with the white vanilla-scented version into a glass jar, and voilá!
You can even pass this gift off as a foot scrub for those who are more into their feet, or you could also gift it as a lip scrub. Speaking of lips…
For the makeup-loving individual in your life, an all-natural lip stain is lovely and requires just two ingredients: beets and coconut oil. We use beetroot powder to give our Berry Patch Bath Bomb and our Himalayan Sunset Bath Bomb their beautiful pink colors and the added coconut oil is a good-for-you ingredient in all of our handcrafted soaps.
Wash and peel the outer layer of the beet and then cut it into small pieces. Stick the beet bits into a food processor and blend until there is a noticeable juice. Strain out the larger bits and mix the juice with about a teaspoon of coconut oil. You can add in more coconut oil for a sheerer lip stain or less for a deeper pigment. Then, just stick your mixture into a small jar or tin.
All you need for this D.I.Y. gift is cornstarch or arrowroot powder and essential oils — or a favorite perfume of the recipient.
Wisk the arrowroot powder or cornstarch together with about 20 drops of the essential oil — or oils — of your choice. Depending on how strong you want that scent to come through, you can add more or fewer drops of the essential oil(s). Some good scents for this perfume powder are lavender, peppermint, vanilla absolute, jasmine, and more.
For the perfume-version, you’ll need a cotton ball and perfume, as well as some extra time. This isn't the ideal version for the last-minute gift, however, if you've got the additional time then you can start by spraying a cotton ball with the perfume of your choice until it’s sufficiently drenched. Stick the cotton ball at the bottom of a jar or tin and add the arrowroot powder or cornstarch on top. Make sure your jar or tin is large enough to hold all of the powder while still having a bit of room left at the top to shake, shake, shake. Continue shaking your jar or tin once each day for up to two weeks to really allow the scent to absorb.
Add a holiday tag with instructions to apply this homemade perfume powder to damp skin after bathing or use it as a yummy-scented dry shampoo. You can also instruct your recipient to add the powder to a pair of shoes that are starting to smell a little funky.
