Our Story
Most soap isn't soap.
It's detergent. It rinses slow, leaves a film, and somehow your hands still look dirty after you wash them. For twenty years the grocery store shelf has been full of it, dressed up in clean packaging with words like "moisturizing" and "refreshing" printed on the side. You already knew something was off. You just couldn't prove it yet.
Our first batch was a disaster. The second wasn't much better. By round ten, neighbors were quietly hoping we'd stop knocking on their doors. Dry hands, wrong ratios, formulas that didn't hold. Real castile soap is chemistry. Get it wrong and people know immediately. Batch ten changed everything. The feedback came back unanimous. Not polite unanimous. Honest unanimous. These were neighbors. They weren't shy. That formula has been the foundation of every bar we've made since.
For nearly twenty years SLAB had a retail shop in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Customers said it looked like an open air farmers market. Big bins of soap everywhere. The smell hit you before you got through the door. People would walk in from a long day, take a breath, and visibly unwind. Every bar leaves here hand wrapped. It did then. It does now. That feeling travels. We like to think it shows up at your door too.
Making soap is art, science, math, and business wrapped around a simple idea. Every batch is a problem to solve, an element to balance, a formula to prove out, starting with sustainably sourced palm, coconut and olive oil. Real experience, real ingredients, real people.
